Richard currently teaches four public classes a week at the Yoga Workshop. When he is traveling or teaching an Intensive, he has substitutes for these classes. Please check substitutes to find out if Richard is teaching when you wish to attend a class.
Appropriate for students brand new to yoga as well as those who have experience and who wish to hone their alignment and understanding of the internal principles of yoga. At the beginning of each class Richard generally asks if this is anyone’s first class. It is a rare occasion when there are no new students in class. Newcomers are never alone. Richard begins the class very internally, focusing on the breath and working gradually through the Sun Salutation, a few poses of the Primary Series and finally, finishing postures appropriate for beginners. This class is one for students who’ve been at the Yoga Workshop for years come back to again and again to refresh their understanding of the fundamentals of the internal forms of Ashtanga Yoga.
This class is an opportunity to work on developing a deep and healthy “self practice” that can be practiced at home or when traveling. For a description of Mysore classes, check out the class description, and the slide show behind the studio on our home page. In Mysore classes students of mixed levels practice whatever series or therapeutic loop of postures they are refining. Richard assists students individually, gives advice on problems students are encountering with their practice, and answers questions.
These classes are appropriate for students who have been practicing at the Yoga Workshop for at least 6 months and have a basic understanding of the principles of the Internal Forms of Ashtanga yoga as taught in all classes at our studio. Students should expect to work on full sun salutations, standing postures as well as some postures of the Primary Series or introductory postures to the Intermediate Series. Students should also be capable of working on beginning stages of full backbend, lotus, shoulder stand and headstand.
(For dates and topics of upcoming talks, please check Studio Talks)
These are talks on yoga and yoga philosophy that Richard presents on a scheduled basis after some Sunday Mysore classes. Topics covered are centered on themes in yoga philosophy and how they relate to an ongoing yoga practice and everyday life. The talks are free and are open to the public. You can listen to samples of some of these talks on our blog.
